Autumn chill is in the air, so of course we’re dreaming of sunny beaches and sea breezes. Let’s take a trip to the sandy shores of Florida! We asked South Florida locals in the Nima community to share their #nimatested favorites of gluten-free South Florida eats! (Tropical drinks and SPF not included.)
Best GF Baked Goods
Notes: Woah! Talk about delicious, vegan, gluten-free treats. When we saw Parlour’s posts on Instagram (#foodporn), we had to visit their shop in Boca! Parlour offers endless amounts of vegan, gourmet baked goods with a large gluten-free selection of mini cupcakes and donuts. Each treat is featured in their display window and all gluten-free AND peanut-free options are marked – GF & PF. It was hard to pick, but we choose four of their gluten-free mini cupcakes to test – Cafecito Mocha, Salted Caramel, Cake Batter, and Butter Beer. Although displayed in the same window as non-GF baked goods, these little guys still check out gluten-free! Nima and our bellies were more than happy!
Best GF Burgers and Sandwiches (with buns)!
Notes: CAUTION — Prepare to be the most indecisive person in the world! Fresh First’s menu features 100% gluten-free, peanut-free and GMO-free options that are all made from scratch! With so many yummy choices, it took more than awhile for us to single out a dish. We ended up with a spinach chicken burger and a chicken salad sandwich from a menu of 18 sandwiches and burgers.
Gluten-free buns sandwiched the following ingredients: Pictured Left, Spinach Chicken Burger- House ground chicken, spinach, goat cheese and cranberry chutney. Pictured Right, Chicken Salad Sandwich – Pulled chicken, granny smith apples, celery, dill, vegan mayo, lettuce and tomato.
Once we brought Nima out, the staff and owner was exceptionally willing to talk about all the precautions taken to ensure their restaurant is indeed, 100% GF (ex. Staff is not allowed to walk through the door with any snacks from outside the kitchen). If you live near Fort Lauderdale or vacationing close by, this is a “must-stop”.
Fun fact: Fresh First has earned recognition as a “GREAT Kitchen” by the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA).
Yummy GF Desserts
Notes: Gourmet Garden Cafe is known for their healthy smoothies and juices, we skipped the juice cleanse and headed straight to dessert (oops)! Out of 12 desserts, 40% were GF. Our taste buds led us in the direction of Avocado Chocolate Mousse served with mixed berries and GF bread pudding, but unfortunately they were out of the pudding. Our server was kind enough to point us to one of her favorite GF desserts which was their honey cake (pictured right). After passing Nima’s tests, both plates were scraped clean!
Best GF/Vegan Comfort Food
Notes: If you’re down for friendly service, delicious flavor packed gluten-free/vegan food and a peaceful ambience, we just found your new spot! Clovermint Cafe & Market features 100% GF menu items for brunch, lunch and dinner. The staff was very passionate about the food they served and even sat down with us to see Nima test. We ordered the avocado fries as a starter and Nima smiled! We were informed that all of their bread is purchased from Joey’s Home Bakery, a 100% gluten-free bakery in Boynton Beach, Fla. (Another place to try out)!
Our lunch featured above passed Nima’s test 3 out of 3! We ordered the Neatball Parmesan Sub, Sunshine Salad, and BBQ Tempeh Sandwich. Oh, and if you’re in the mood for an alcoholic beverage, they also serve four gluten-free craft beers: Green’s Quest Tripel Ale, Green’s Endeavour Dubbel Ale, Green’s Discovery Amber Ale, and Cigar City Apple Pie Cider.
Best Sunday Brunch
Notes: This place is where it’s at for a healthy, GF options made from scratch daily! We searched for GF breakfast/brunch options nearby and came across this trendy, modern brick n’ mortar. They feature a brunch menu available only on Sundays (which it totally worth the plan ahead), but their menu is full of GF options for lunch and dinner as well. We tested their famous chia pancakes – maple syrup, and a choice of seasonal fruit or chocolate chips (pictured above), their Pumpkin French Toast – maple syrup, topped with toasted pecans & a sprinkle of powdered sugar, and their Tofu Scramble – sprouted tofu, bell peppers, turmeric, breakfast potatoes & a side of flax & millet toast. The results, gluten-free X 3! Great place to grab a bite and lounge outside on their back patio.
