Gluten-free Cape Town: A #nimatested Dining Guide
Cape Town is quite a gluten-free dining destination. One of our Nima team members, Wiley, tested over 20 restaurants during his travels in South Africa. From wineries nestled in the dramatic Stellenbosch valley to farm-to-table breakfast spots downtown, he found Cape Town to be both delicious and accommodating.
Tested: Gluten-free muffin.
Notes: Fantastic chocolate and very cosy back patio. The muffin is served with coconut ice cream and chocolate sauce!
Tested: Porridge of the guards and buckwheat pancakes.
Result: Both smiles!
Notes: A chic breakfast and lunch spot in downtown. Skinny legs features fantastic juices and hearty GF dishes. Their oat porridge tested GF.
Tested: Teff Injera.
Notes: This Ethiopian restaurant has an entirely gluten-free kitchen! Choose between teff-flour injera and rice-flour injera to scoop amazing stews and sauces with.
Tested: Gluten-free housemade seed bread.
Notes: For breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Clarke’s is a vibrant and healthy spot, especially on art gallery first Thursdays. Their seed bread is delicious and tested GF!
Tested: Chickpea fries.
Notes: These chickpea fries are to die for — crispy exterior, creamy interior. With ceviche served between tortilla chips, arancini with melted mozzarella inside, and more gluten-free options, the Pot Luck Club is a GF destination.
Tested: Polenta fries.
Notes: With a retro modern indoor and garden-filled outdoor, this spot epitomizes the Cape Town dining scene. The polenta fries are perfectly crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside, with lemon zest and herbs on top.
Notes: Simply the best ground beef ever, sourced from the leading regenerative farmer in the country. This hip cafe shares space with an Aesop cosmetics store and upscale men’s clothing store – chic!
Tested: Potato Rosti.
Notes: A cute upscale cafe in downtown with many delectable small plates to choose from. Their salads and eggs are poached with love.
Tested: Gluten-free house baked bread.
Notes: At their weekly four-course “Long Sunday Lunch”, we were so pleasantly surprised to find that they bake their own GF bread in house every day and serve it with wonderful honey butter. Gorgeous salads and expertly cooked beef soon followed. This Stellenbosch wine country destination also offers picnic baskets to enjoy on their lawns and gardens.
Tested: Chilled tomato soup.
Notes: The gem of Stellenbosch, Babylonstoren has acres of beautiful gardens and four fantastic restaurants. While walking the gardens, you can reach out and grab a plum or handful of grapes, like you’re in the garden of Eden.
