Hiking trips are amazing! Thinking back to my favourite hikes, they would be anywhere in the Rocky Mountains or in the Volcano National Park in Hawaii. I also hate to be unprepared, so I always plan out my breakfast and gluten-free snacks to bring with me for the day. Setting myself up to be my greatest-self is the best thing I can do.

After I figure out my meal ideas, I can focus on looking forward to exploring nature. The fresh air, bright colors and sky take over and you can go and discover it.

Gluten-Free Breakfast Ideas

I always recommend having a large breakfast before a day of activity and being in the outdoors. Having energy with a healthy and filling breakfast is key to any day, especially when it is filled with activity. Some of my favourite breakfasts on hike days are:

  • Bacon, eggs and hash browns*
  • Omelets with lots of vegetables; and
  • Sausages and sweet potato hash browns*

While I usually make whole-made hash browns, the tater tots from Ore-Ida are also a favorite.

Gluten-Free Hiking Snacks

A great way to search for gluten-free snacks for your trip is to spend time browsing the gluten-free aisle at your local grocery store!

Pro Tip: If you are trying a new product, test it with your Nima Gluten Sensor to make sure it is safe.

Beef Jerky

The best brands are Oberto, Krave and Epic Bison. If you have other brands that you like, you can pack them too. Beef jerky is packed with protein and calories for the day.

Dried Fruit

You can pick up a bag of your favourite dried fruit and put it into individual sized zip-lock bags to add to you backpack. This way it doesn’t weigh down your bag and you can mix in other fruits to make a flavorful snack.

Tip: If you have a dehydrator you could make your own dried fruit and beef jerky too.

Gluten-Free Granola

Finding a gluten-free granola at your local supermarket makes for a great snack along the way. While you can pick any of the options at your store, my favorites are the Udi’s, Bakery on Main, and Bob’s Red Mill granolas.

Nuts

Nuts pack a powerful protein kick, along with vitamins and minerals for any hiking day.

Based on the research done at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) nuts have the following nutrients based on 1 cup.

My favorite two nuts are whole almonds and walnuts. I love the flavor and crunch.

Gluten-Free Pretzels

My preferred gluten-free brand is Snyder’s Gluten Free Pretzels. They are light and way crispier than other ones and they won’t cost an arm and a leg.

Tip: Add the dried fruit, granola, nuts and pretzels together to make a powerful trail mix for your hiking trip. Once you make a large batch, store the rest in a large glass jar. You can easily have it with fruit, yogurt or milk for a healthy gluten-free snacks on busy days.

Protein Bars

There are many options for gluten-free protein bars. I usually take a protein bar, rather than a traditional granola bar to keep me fuller for longer. But you can pack extra granola bars too. These are my top three protein bars:

Luna Protein Bars are great for a dose of vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre in an easy to carry package. They are also extremely tasty, one of the few bars that I actually look forward to eating.

Solo Bars have delicious flavor options. Depending on the kind, it can have up to 11 grams of protein to keep you full.

Pure Protein Bars also have delicious flavors and are packing around 19 grams of protein.

Tuna and Gluten-Free Crackers

Tuna has approximately 24 grams of protein in every 100-gram serving. You can easily have this with your favourite gluten-free cracker for a great snack on the trail.

For crackers, I like the Original Glutino Crackers or the gluten-free Breton crackers. Of course, you can use whatever your favorite is.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches on Gluten-Free Bread

It doesn’t matter what age you are, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches always hit the spot. Packing sandwiches in a plastic container is the best way to keep them from getting squished.

Gluten-Free Sausages

An easy and convenient snack to take anywhere is a gluten-free sausage or pepperoni stick. Jam packed with protein and calories; it can take you a long way.
