Gluten-free Fitness: Getting Your Foot in the Door

Ready, set, go!

Welcome to my gluten-free home gym! After my Celiac Disease diagnosis, I put my feet on the ground and never stopped running. I was so stubborn, I ran a 20 mile training run that year. It was ridiculous, but I was in denial. I fought for my workout routine then and I still fight for my workouts now. I’d love to tell you that it’s been easy but that wouldn’t be the truth. Our immune systems are complicated. Our lives are complicated. I can make 100 excuses, but I don’t anymore. I changed my mindset and that changed my life. I give myself permission to have bad days, but 99% of the time, I push myself.

I start off everyday by taking my little yorkie for a walk. I have to take my thyroid medicine on an empty stomach and this helps pass the time. We love routine in our house! He won’t stop bothering me until he gets his walk. He’s a funny little guy. I use our walks as a warm up, so we both win in the end.

I encourage you to start your morning with a walk!

Then we weight train. I’ve been working with a trainer for years. We focus on different muscle groups, on different days. I also do a lot of body weight exercises. Working out is not complicated. If you don’t have a gym membership, invest in some weights, bands, or TRX.

  • Mondays: Back & biceps
  • Tuesdays: Chest
  • Wednesdays: Legs
  • Thursdays: Shoulders & triceps
  • Fridays: I usually do an extra day of back.

If I miss a day, I’ll skip that week, or figure it out on another day. I’m also always adding core to the end of my workouts, focusing on my stomach. Core twists, leg lifts, mountain climbers, bicycles, planks. Anything and everything to feel good about my stomach. On the days I don’t run or can’t run, I go to the gym and use their bike or elliptical. Those are easier on my joints and way more manageable with my constant fatigue.

It’s not always easy, but I feel so much better after I workout!

After my workouts, I try and focus on getting in some protein. I don’t eat meat, but making protein a priority has made me stronger and helped with muscle recovery. I’m currently obsessed with OWYN protein. They have a few different flavors, but vanilla is my favorite! I tested the OWYN protein with my Nima. All smiles.

I live a very regimented life. That’s what works best for me. I focus on drinking enough water, getting an adequate amount of sleep, and fueling my body with good, healthy foods every single day. Living this gluten-free life can feel overwhelming at times, but I’ve never felt overwhelmed at the gym. The gym is my happy place. Put on some headphones, listen to some good music or a podcast, and focus on getting healthy.
